Principal's Blog

Last week I was officially appointed as the Principal of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School. Putting yourself forward for a position like this is a big decision requiring deep consideration.

This week sees us officially begin the season of Spring. We have been blessed with glorious weather as a sign of the warmth to come as we leave behind the Winter chill. It is fitting that at this time in our church we are celebrating a Season of Creation. This is a time to honour God as Creator and consider our role as stewards of Creation.
This week we take the opportunity to celebrate our fathers, grandfathers and father figures in our lives.

In contemporary schooling we seek opportunities to provides for our students to have a voice when it comes to their learning. At Our Lady of Mount Carmel we provide many opportunities for students to have their voice heard.
Sub tuum praesidium, these are the words of our school motto. I wonder if you know what these words mean?
Jesus reached out to those in the community who were on the margins. Our Bishop, Vincent calls us to do the same.
When most of us were tiny children we were taught how to make the sign of the Cross. This is a simple symbol of the Trinity.
It is with great excitement that our school theme for the 2018 school year is “GLOW & GROW AS WE TRANSFORM TOGETHER”.

The season of Advent begins this week and continues through the four Sundays of Advent and ends at Christmas Eve. The first week of Advent focuses on the return of the Lord and the following weeks focus more specifically on the anticipation of the birth of Jesus. Rather than simply commemorating an historical event, Advent is a time of preparing our hearts to ‘receive’ Jesus into the world each year. Advent is traditionally marked by the colour of violet – the same colour as used in Lent.
