After an unforgettable camping adventure at Collaroy, Year 6 has hit the ground running this year! Can you believe Term 1 is almost done and dusted? In English, students have been fully immersed in Storm Boy by Colin Thiele, deepening their understanding of the novel by also watching its 1976 film adaptation. This study has helped them refine their skills of key narrative techniques for both reading and writing. They have worked on enhancing their sentence structure, using effective language features and expanding their vocabulary. A major focus has been on “showing” rather than “telling” by incorporating the five senses to create vivid, descriptive paragraphs that bring their writing to life. In Mathematics, students have been strengthening their knowledge of core concepts such as place value, addition and subtraction, and measurement. They have applied these foundational skills to more complex word problems and used concrete materials like MAB blocks and decimats to explore fractions and decimals. Their understanding of measurement has also been put into practice, with trundle wheels helping them measure different surfaces around the school. Additionally, they have learned how to convert between metres and kilometres with confidence. In Religion, students have been reflecting on the question: What is human dignity? They have explored Scripture, particularly Genesis 1:26-27, where it reveals that we are created in God's image and, as a result, have a responsibility to treat others with love, respect, and compassion. Through studying examples of Jesus demonstrating human dignity in Scripture, the students have considered ways to follow in His footsteps. A highlight of this learning journey was the Encounter experience, where students joined their Year 6 peers in worship through song, personal faith reflections, and an inspiring Adoration service led by renowned Christian musician Gen Bryant. This powerful experience allowed them to encounter the presence of the Holy Spirit in a truly meaningful way. In preparation for Encounter, students also explored how, as Catholic faithful, we participate in ways that bring us closer to God. Fr. Albi introduced the students to Adoration, a time for quiet reflection in front of the consecrated host, where they had the opportunity to draw closer to God and engage in personal conversation with Him. As the term draws to a close, we celebrated students’ hard work and dedication with a well-earned reward day! They had an absolute blast playing indoor and outdoor games, making bookmarks, indulging in their favourite snacks and enjoying a special movie to wrap up a fantastic first term.

Yesterday our Year 6 students participated in a formation day called “Encounter”. The day provided an opportunity for students to deepen their faith through high-energy Praise and Worship, engaging discussions with peers from other schools and a powerful experience of Eucharistic Adoration. Led by Gen Bryant, a Catholic singer-songwriter, the event featured uplifting music, personal testimonies and thought-provoking sessions. Students explored the themes “Who do you say I am?”—reflecting on identity and faith—and “Imago Dei” (Made in the Image and Likeness of God), fostering a deeper understanding of their self-worth and the dignity of others. Throughout the day, students sang, danced, prayed and connected with one another, making it a truly immersive and inspiring encounter with Christ. Here’s what they had to say about their experience: "It was very interactive. We got to do a lot of fun things like dancing, singing, and learning about our faith. Gen Bryant was really fun and I enjoyed how she shared her life story—it helped me feel more confident." – Zoe S "I found the experience very engaging and social. It was inspiring and helped me feel closer to God through Adoration. When we prayed and kneeled, I had a peaceful moment to talk to God and ask for His forgiveness. Meeting new people and sharing with them made me more confident, as it helped me understand their perspectives on the world—how it is and how it can be. I loved getting to learn." – Owen A "It was fun and interactive. I have never felt closer to God in my life than I did that day. It was so exciting to meet a singer and to dance and sing along. I learned that God forgives our sins even though we cannot see Him. God is everything—He created everything, watches over everything and is always forgiving. I am a creation of God, and He loves me." – James B
